Chapter Eleven

With very little sleep from the night before and a busy afternoon at the shop, I was exhausted by the time I got Barley settled into my apartment and then arrived in the parking lot of the Cumberpatch Cove Police Department.

Other than a middle-aged guy leaning against a chest-high counter speaking to the officer who was standing on the other side filling out paperwork, there wasn’t a lot of activity in the small reception area. Judging by the man’s brightly flowered shirt, khaki pants, and overhearing his loud complaint about losing his wallet, I was pretty sure he wasn’t a local.

“Rylee, is everything okay?” Roy was tugging on a jacket as he entered the room from a side hallway. More than likely it was the end of his shift and he was on his way home. “Did something happen to…”

I patted his shoulder. “Don’t worry, everything’s fine, including Grams.”

“Then what are you doing here?”

“Detective Prescott called and asked me to stop by.” I left out the “insisted” part of our conversation. No need to go there unless I had to.

“My nephew did what?” Roy shook his head, then dragged his hand down his face. “Did he bother to say why?”

Nephew? I knew the sheriff had a sister he rarely mentioned living somewhere in the state, but I’d never heard about any other family members. I was still trying to process the fact that the two were related when Logan walked into the reception area with a confident swagger.

“Because I have a few more questions about the Jessica Jenkins case.”

Now that they were standing next to each other, I could see a slight resemblance around the eyes and their defined jaws. There was definitely some tension between the two men and I wondered for the second time what Logan was doing in Cumberpatch.

If he was working on Jessica’s murder, it was clear he wasn’t here on vacation to visit his uncle. Why was he staying at the inn instead of with Roy? Was his trip here temporary, or had he transferred? Or, and maybe this was the most plausible of my questionable theories, was he working on something in Bangor that was tied to a case here? And, if so, what did it have to do with Jessica’s death?

My head was spinning with so many unanswered questions that I’d missed hearing what Logan had said. He had to clear his throat and touch my arm to get my attention. “Ms. Spencer…Rylee, I’d like you to come with me.”

“Sure.” I gave Roy a little wave, and since this was my first time inside the police station, I let Logan lead me farther into the building.

We walked through a wide area filled with cubicles on the left and several doors leading into offices on the right. One of the doors was closed, the name plaque engraved with Roy’s title and full name.

“In here.” Logan stopped at the end of the hall and opened a door to a room I assumed was used for interrogations.
